Seoul Calcio FC continues to stand out as a vibrant football community in South Korea’s capital. For a 32-year-old Dutch player known as Geert Jan, the club represents both a fresh chapter and a continuation of a lifelong football journey.

Originally from the Netherlands, Geert began playing football at the age of five. Inspired by his older brother, he joined a local club and quickly became immersed in the sport.

Like many children in his hometown, football was part of everyday life. Even a brief two-year break to play volleyball at age seven did not interrupt his long-term connection to the game.

While he enjoys watching football, Geert has never been deeply focused on following players or statistics. Still, certain moments stand out, including the intense Netherlands vs. Portugal match at the 2006 World Cup.

Football played a major role in his social life growing up. Teammates became close friends, almost like family, with strong bonds that extended beyond the pitch.

Weekend matches often turned into social gatherings. These shared experiences created lasting relationships that remain meaningful despite distance and time.

After moving to Seoul, Geert joined Seoul Calcio FC within weeks. He was looking for regular training and a sense of community in a new city.

His first training session left a strong impression. There was a mix of new and experienced players, all eager to play and connect through football.

At Seoul Calcio, relationships matter as much as performance. Trust is built through communication, including both positive feedback and honest criticism.

This mindset also influences his professional life. He values strong personal connections and believes honest feedback makes teams more effective.

On the pitch, his role has evolved. Once focused on scoring, he now enjoys creating opportunities and contributing as a midfielder. “I can enjoy a beautiful assist almost more than scoring a goal myself,” he notes. This shift reflects a broader, more team-oriented mindset.

His view on competition has also matured. For him, football remains a blend of performance, growth, and enjoyment, pointing out, "Don’t forget to have fun. Be honest with yourself and realise that if you’re not having fun, it won’t be worth pursuing the sport".
